Teeth Cleanings & Checkups

Here at Sullivant Dentistry, we are fortunate to have very talented hygienists. Each hygienist is unique in that they were once dental assistants and understand more than most the fears, desires and wants of patients. This talent, combined with gentle touches, allows both new and existing patients to be able to enjoy routine cleanings without fears of pain or remorse.

Most patients assume that six months is the ideal time to be reminded to have their teeth cleaned. This is true for HEALTHY non-diseased gums and teeth. Here at Sullivant Dentistry, we take the time to teach, treat and help you decide what recall interval is ideal for your health.

Cleaning Your Teeth

During the cleaning, your hygienist will scrape off tartar above and below the gum line and then rinse it away with a stream of water. The hygienist will then polish the teeth with a lightly abrasive paste and finish up with a flossing. The now-smooth tooth surfaces make it more difficult for plaque to accumulate before the next cleaning. If needed, she will also take x-rays or additional tests depending on your needs.

Examining Your Teeth

After your teeth are clean, Dr. John will examine them for signs of decay, using a metal probe and a small mirror with an angled handle. He will check for gum swelling and redness and measure the depth of the gum line. Swelling, redness, and deep pockets are all signs of gum disease. He will review your x-rays or results of other tests and determine if any further treatment is needed or additional appointments.
